Superbowl of Birding IX
Come to northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire for great winter birding and a chance to compete with other birders. The Superbowl of Birding is a unique competition to find the greatest number of species and to earn the greatest number of points based on the rarity of the birds recorded. Strategy and planning are essential in order to win this competition. The event consists of activities targeted for all levels of birders. Among ten categories of prizes, the Joppa Cup is awarded to the team that collects the most points by the end of the specified 12-hour birding day. Beginning birders, or those who prefer indoor birding at this time of year, can join Joppa Flats naturalists in the indoor bird blind to establish a record high species count for January at Joppa Flats. More experienced birders can form a team of their own. There is a young birders category for teams with members 18 years old or younger. The Fledgling Award is aimed at participants under age 12 and has its own special checklist. The registration fee includes the post-competition pizza party and prizes. Register before January 1 and receive a $5 discount per person. For registration materials, rules, and information, please go to www.massaudubon.org/superbowl or call 978-462-9998. Registration is required. Call (978) 462-9998 for details. See http://www.massaudubon.org/catalog/listing.phpprogramcode=418-JF12WI1 for more information.
